This year’s Resident Research Day was hosted by UMMC and held on February 5, 2022, at the Embassy Suites Conference Center in Ridgeland, MS. Multiple engaging topics were presented by residents from the dermatology programs at University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC).

The keynote address, “Research in residency: Does it matter?”, was presented by Dr. Sara Shalin, Chair, Department of Dermatology, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. This was followed by resident presentations from the participating dermatology programs. Dr. C. Ralph Daniel provided first and second place awards for the top two presentations. On behalf of all of the programs we would like to again thank him for his generosity.

The first-place award went to Dr. Lauren Lange from UTHSC Kaplan Amonette Department of Dermatology. Her presentation was “Joint Rheumatology-Dermatology Clinics: Is the Combination Greater Than Its Original Parts? A Review of Benefits, Challenges, and Areas for Improvement Encountered in Collaborative Specialty Clinics.”

Second place was awarded to Dr. Hannah Badon from UMMC and her presentation was “Overcoming Barriers to Rural Academic Dermatology.” She credited this project to work compiled in partnership with Drs. Ross Pearlman, Josh Ortego, Robert Brodell, and Adam Byrd.

Two other excellent presentations by UMMC residents included “Acne & Rosacea: An Assessment of Comorbidities and Quality of Life” by Dr. Laura Rezac and “Dermatology Residency Training at the VA: Is there demonstrable value to the resident?” by Dr. Colleen Drapcho Powers.

On behalf of the Southern Dermatology Consortium, we would like to sincerely thank all of the participants as well as our donors; Castle Biosciences, AbbVie, Pfizer, Incyte, UCB, Janssen, and Novartis; for making this event possible.
